Getting Involved

History and background

The Abbeyfield movement was started in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gomm an ex-army officer. He realised that community and companionship was a better way to live for the elderly than on their own and in isolation. He bought a small house in Bermondsey south London and invited two local residents who had been living alone to join him. The first Abbeyfield house had been born. The Abbeyfield Worthing Society, a registered charity, was founded in 1961 by a group of local residents. As the Abbeyfield ethos matched their aims and ambitions so closely, they became affiliated with the national Abbeyfield movement. Our Royal Patron is HRH the Prince of Wales and our National President is Brenda Dean, Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde.

Abbeyfield brings elderly people together, offering them support and companionship.

We are dedicated to providing older people with a real alternative to living on their own or going into care/nursing homes before they need to. Our houses offer people the opportunity to maintain their own lifestyle whilst benefitting from an inclusive and supportive living environment. Moreover our houses are run by local staff and volunteers who genuinely care, and share our aim to assist older people enjoy life to the full, along with companionship and community.

We understand how important freedom and independence are, but we are always there for reassurance, help and security when needed.

Quality of life begins at home, and we know moving in later life can be daunting. So we make the process as smooth and easy as possible. We’ll be there from the start to reassure and support you in any way we can. Abbeyfield Worthing is run on a non-profit basis and to help to keep our running costs down we have a number of dedicated volunteers. They help with outings, entertainment, office administration, house maintenance etc.

Our board of trustees who are also volunteers, ensure that our organisation is run both ethically and effectively. Volunteers help our residents to get maximum benefit from living with us and at a highly affordable and cost effective monthly rate.

All potential residents are asked to come and stay with us for a week and try first-hand the Abbeyfield experience.
